Timber shortages continue to impact the building industry...
The Timber shortage in Australia continues to be a major concern for all building businesses. In fact, the timber shortage situation is not getting any better, with indications that it is only getting worse.
The shortage is due to the compound effects of the December 2019 bushfires burning large amounts of stock from local timber mills as well as imported supply being soaked up by other countries due to the pandemic and industrial wharf disputes.
The shortages continue to be found in timber products as well as tapware, hinges, door furniture and tiles.
Unfortunately, this also means that the price of these materials is increasing due to short supply and continued high demand. If you look at the below image, this is what builders are currently dealing with.
In January 2020, there was no issue in sourcing timber products and your value for money was significant. However, if you look at June 2021, your value for money has dramatically decreased as timber becomes more difficult to get a hold off.
Consideration for these shortages will need to come into play right at the beginning during the initial design and concept stages. Builders are going to have to order these materials well in advance to ensure supply is available, and the homeowners will need to be patient as we continue to face the uncertainty of ongoing delays from our timber suppliers.
